Hoods For Heroes continues its mission in Pasco County to provide chemical blocking hoods to local firefighters
Pasco County, Florida – Hoods For Heroes (HFH) is continuing its mission to provide carcinogen-blocking hoods to firefighters across the country by working with local businesses to raise over $5,500 for Pasco County firefighters at Stations 19 and 17. These hoods are specifically designed to reduce exposure to deadly cancer causing chemicals that firefighters are exposed to daily. The delivery will take place on August 28that 1:30pm.
Cancer in fire service is at epidemic levels. With a 9% higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14% higher risk of dying from cancer than the general population, it is easy to understand the increased risk Firefighters face on the job. A Firefighter’s risk for specific types of cancer is significantly higher. The National Institute of Science and Health (NIOSH) reports that Firefighters are 2.02 times higher risk for testicular cancer and 1.53 times at greater risk for multiple myeloma. It is reported that as many as one in three Firefighters will be diagnosed with cancer during their careers with current statistics indicating more than 60% of line of duty deaths are due to cancer. This effort will bring awareness and support to those who risk their lives daily to protect others. “We are thankful for all the community donors that have partnered with Hoods for Heroes to supply Firefighters with these hoods that are crucial to Firefighter health and safety, said Fire Chief Scott Cassin.
“Once again, the local community in Pasco County is stepping up in to support their local heroes,” Co-Founder Bill Hamiltonsaid. “Our continued partnership with the community will provide more hoods to Pasco firefighters to reduce exposures to harmful carcinogens, added CEO Jeff Rountree. Special thanks to our generous donors: Patriot Lending, Merritt Funeral Home, Bayport Inn, Crown Diamonds, Stewart Tree Service, Gulf Coast Title and Mimi McLeod Century 21. Also, thanks to the Kell, Shannon, Breden, Frazier and Batt families. Without support from socially responsible individuals and businesses like these, our fundraising efforts could not happen.
